Director's Message On behalf of Colonel Darnell S. Weaver, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety, as well as Chief Edward A. Mello, Chair of the Police Officers Commission on Standards and Training, I would like to welcome you to the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy website. The staff at the Municipal Police Training Academy is eager and highly motivated to train prospective law enforcement officers. They are equally motivated to provide the highest quality of continuing education for current law enforcement professionals. The mission of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy is to provide nationally-accepted basic recruit training to aspiring municipal, college and university police officers. We are committed to producing well-rounded, competent, educated, and highly motivated police officers. Each member of the Municipal Police Training Academy staff and adjunct instructors brings talent, skill and dedication to his or her duties and responsibilities. They are of the highest quality, and continually strive to better educate Rhode Island’s law enforcement officers. I am privileged to be the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy. It is a grave responsibility which demands focus and commitment. Law enforcement is an ever-evolving profession. As the Director, I am committed to the process of continuous selfassessment to enable the Academy keep pace with this evolutionary process and provide prospective law enforcement officers with the training they require.
