Director's Message

Welcome to the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy.

The strength of Rhode Island's law enforcement community is rooted in its ability to work together.  The leadership of Colonel Darnell Weaver, Director of the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety; Colonel Michael Winquist, Chair of the Rhode Island Police Officers' Commission on Standards and Training; and Chief Michael Correia, President of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs' Association, fosters a collaborative public safety environment that supports the Academy's mission and continued success.  Through partnerships among municipal, state and federal law enforcement agencies, the Community College of Rhode Island, the Rhode Island National Guard, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community stakeholders, we advance a comprehensive approach to public safety that contributes to Rhode Island's continued recognition as one of the safest states in the nation.

Our Basic Training Academy prepares the next generation of police officers through a rigorous evidence-based program and curriculum designed to develop the knowledge, judgment, practical skills and resilience required to meet the evolving challenges of modern policing with confidence, courage, competence and integrity.

Our Continuing Education Division provides advanced and specialized training that enables active law enforcement professionals to strengthen their capabilities, embrace innovation and remain prepared throughout every stage of their careers.  In partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, Office on Highway Safety, our Highway Safety Programs deliver sustained basic and advanced traffic-safety training that strengthens enforcement capabilities, improves roadway safety and supports our shared commitment to protecting the traveling public.

At RIMPTA, we believe excellence in policing begins with collaboration, professionalism and a commitment to lifelong learning.  We are proud to stand alongside our law enforcement, educational, military, government, nonprofit and community partners in preparing today's officers and developing tomorrow's leaders in service to the people of Rhode Island.
