Requirements for Recruits

Interested in Becoming a Police Officer in Rhode Island?

If you are interested in becoming a police officer in the State of Rhode Island, you must first contact a police department looking to hire law enforcement officers and follow that department's recruitment process. If chosen, that police department will hire you as a probationary police officer and sponsor you to the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy. In order to be enrolled in the Police Academy, the police department sponsoring you must submit an application to the Police Academy. Once the application is accepted you will be enrolled in the next recruitment class.

NOTE: Individuals do not submit applications to the Police Academy.

Recruitment classes consist of 22 weeks. Below are some of the topics covered:

  • Homeland Security
  • Basic Crime Scene Investigation
  • Patrol Operations
  • Physical Fitness
  • Community Policing
  • Report Writing
  • Use of Force & Police Combatives
  • Firearms Training
  • Fair and Impartial Policing
  • Hate Crimes
  • Basic Water Rescue
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Domestic Violence / Sexual Assault
